Drag to push traffic through. Services and workers scale out; the queue takes the bursts. The ring is the gateway health-checking its services.

Every layer of the system

Follow a request from the browser to the database. I design and build each layer it passes through. At each one, break something in the simulation and watch the layer hold.

  1. Full-stack build

Front end to database, so the interface is built for the system behind it.

    Clients: Web and mobile apps.

  2. Cloud infrastructure

Environments, scaling and cost, set up as code. The edge takes the first hit so nothing behind it has to.

    Edge: CDN, TLS, static assets.

  3. API design

Contracts that stay stable while the product changes underneath, with auth and rate limits at the door.

API gateway: Auth, routing, rate limits, health checks.

  4. System design

Service boundaries, failure modes, and where the load will land. Stateless services scale out; queues absorb what can wait.

Services: Stateless, scale out with load. Queue: Absorbs bursts, never drops work.

  5. Data modelling

Schemas, caching and consistency chosen for how the data is actually read.

Cache: Hot reads off the database. Database: Primary with read replica.

  6. Operations

Monitoring, alerts and docs, so whoever runs the system can see what it is doing and why.

Every part above, monitored and documented.

Bikram Sambat

Open-source library on npm

  1. Problem

Nepal runs on the Bikram Sambat calendar, but JavaScript’s Date only knows the Gregorian one. BS month lengths change from year to year, so a date can’t be converted with a formula alone.

  2. Approach

A BikramSambat date object you can start from a BS string, an AD date or today, then read and set its year, month and day. Each instance carries its AD date and the BS month name alongside.

  3. API

Formatting, start and end of a unit, adding and subtracting, and comparisons (isSame, isBefore, isAfter, isBetween), named the way Day.js names them, which the library builds on.

  4. Range

Covers 1970 to 2111 BS. Parsing validates the date and only accepts years in that range, and the month table for any year in it is available on its own.

  5. Shipped

Published to npm in June 2024 with ES module, CommonJS and TypeScript type builds, tested with Jest and MIT licensed. Maintained since, with fixes for comparisons and arithmetic when a BS month spans two AD months.
